Tamarindo as a Base for Adventure Holidays
If you are looking for an exciting alternative to your usual two weeks in the sun, choosing a holiday that is filled with adventure and adrenaline could be just the ticket. Surrounded by many stunning natural wonders, Costa Rica’s Tamarindo Beach is the perfect destination for just such a trip.
Many people are put off the idea of adventure holidays because they think they will come back exhausted when all they really want is a relaxing break. Others shy away from the idea of a beach holiday because they worry they will get bored. The great thing about Tamarindo Beach is that it provides you with the best of both worlds.
There are huge stretches of white sand beaches and the sea contains more than enough marine life to keep all but the most demanding snorkellers and divers happy, but the area is also surrounded by national parks filled with a wide range of beautiful natural attractions. These include waterfalls, lagoons, and volcanoes and most of them are only a short drive away.
A relatively small, compact city, Tamarindo has been described as a miniature tropical paradise and is said to be one of the most beautiful coastal areas anywhere in the world. The sunrises and sunsets are particularly stunning. It is easy to get around on foot or bicycle and if you feel like letting someone else take the strain, you will find plenty of taxis available.
Nature lovers will be impressed by the wide range of different habitats that are present in the parks themselves. Palo Verde, for example, includes swamps, mangroves, marshes, and forests as well as freshwater and saltwater lagoons. The La Baulas National Park, a short drive away from the beach, is one of the few places in the world where it is possible to witness Giant Leatherback Turtles laying their eggs.
Back at the beach, it is easy to continue the adventure by embarking on some of the many diving tours that are on offer or indulging in a wide range of water sports. Tamarindo is hugely popular with surfers as the water is warm and the waves high all year round. If you have surfed before you will be able to push your skills to the limit, however, if you are brand new to the sport, there are dozens of surfing schools located all along the beach, making it easy to learn how.
Tamarindo is also a popular destination for sport fishing and record-breaking catches of marlin, giant tuna and sailfish are made on a regular basis. For a small fee, most beachfront restaurants will be happy to cook your catch for you, allowing you to experience the taste of truly fresh fish.
If you want to experience the ultimate physical challenge whilst on holiday, you could even enter yourself into the Tamarindo Beach Marathon, held each September.
The large numbers of tourists heading to Tamarindo each year mean the city has excellent facilities with great bars and restaurants, galleries and even a casino, all of which make it easy to unwind and relax at the end of each day.
