Tips For Getting The Best Tamarindo Costa Rica Vacation Rentals Pt. 4: What To Expect Upon Arrival: Pura Vida!

The first installment of our Tips For Tamarindo Vacation Rentals series we discussed the advantages of using a professional property management service when searching for a vacation rental in Tamarindo. In part two we covered the various location choices in the area. We detailed how Tamarindo truly has something for everybody when it comes to vacation rental property locations. In the last installment of our series,  we gave you the rundown on the available price ranges and what to expect for your money when renting in the Tamarindo area.  We covered how great values can be found in all price ranges, and how to get the most bang for your buck.  Whatever your price range you can be sure to find something that will suit your budget and needs, provided you get some good advice from a trusted agent or property management company.

In this post we will give you the rundown on what to expect once you arrive, and how to settle in and adapt to the lifestyle in your temporary home in the tropical paradise of Tamarindo.

So, you have done your research and you have found a great property management service that has set you up with the ideal vacation rental property. You have your tickets booked, sunscreen and swimsuit packed and you are ready to go!  You can practically hear the howler monkeys, exotic birds, and surf pounding from outside your newly rented bedroom window.  This natural beauty, mixed with the culture and amenities available here, is what makes the Tamarindo area special, but there are some things you should know about paradise before you get here.

The People

The people of Costa Rica are what make this country truly special. “Ticos” as they call themselves have a friendliness and helpfulness that is unequaled. Their good-natured spirit makes them a joy to be around.  Ticos are eager to please and take pride in showing off their beautiful country. Be open and ask questions you will make instant friends with the staff of your rental property, and you might even get the inside track on where to go, and what to do.

Pura Vida!

This expression exemplifies the Costa Rican way of life, and it translates literally as “pure life”, but it’s not as simple as that.  In conversation, Pura Vida can be a friendly greeting, an expression of gratitude or happiness, or just a way to say, “such is life”.  In day-to-day conversation it is the Tico’s way of saying enjoy the moment, relax, and have fun because, hey, you’re in paradise right?  It’s this attitude that makes vacationing here such a wonderful experience.  That said, the Pura Vida essence of Costa Rica can run counter to many people’s expectations coming from North America or other fast-paced cultures when it comes to things like amenities, services, and punctuality, to name a few.  While the majority of rental properties in the Tamarindo area boast top-notch amenities and services, and are professionally managed, you should be aware that Costa Rica’s “Pura Vida” attitude might affect your stay when it comes to things like maintenance, basic services and transportation. Sometimes things just don’t happen as quickly, or in the way that you might expect.  Again, make sure you choose a reputable booking service or rental agency who hold their staff to a higher standard and you should have no problems. If you do have some issues?…  Just relax, and say “Pura Vida”!

Basic Services

Tamarindo has great water, electric, phone, and internet service, however there can be times when there are gaps in service and response times may not be as prompt as one might expect in other parts of the world. While it is fairly uncommon to be without water, electric or communication services for more than a few hours, it can happen.  Most professional property rental agents have contingencies in effect to make sure that their properties are outfit to handle power outages and water problems.  Check with your rental agent to see if your property has a generator, or a water backup system.  If you do experience a loss in service, relax, enjoy the candlelight, take a dip in the ocean to cool off and remember to enjoy the simple things in life. That’s what vacationing in the tropics is all about.

Pristine nature surrounds the Tamarindo area and is the main appeal here for most visitors.  However, there are things visitors should know if they are squeamish about things that crawl, slither, or fly. You may encounter critters in and around your property.  If you think geckos are cute, then no problem, but even the best maintained, clean and meticulously appointed properties will have houseguests, it’s just a fact of life in the tropics. That’s not to say that you should expect to find your property crawling with unsavory critters;  again here is where having a well maintained and professionally managed property will insure that your rental will be clean and free of unwanted visitors, and if you do encounter the occasional creepy crawler, take a picture! These are the things that make Costa Rica so special.

While we have only just touched on the basics on what to expect when you arrive to your Tamarindo Vacation Rental, this should be a good starting point.  The key is keeping an open mind and embracing the Pura Vida spirit, and you will love your stay in the Tamarindo area.
