Part Two: Tamarindo Restaurants

In part one of this ten part series of things to do in Costa Rica, we discussed zip lining and the different types of tour packages and companies operating in the Tamarindo area. In part two, we will discuss the wide variety of restaurants and dining experiences found throughout Tamarindo.

It’s no secret that one of the best parts of being on vacation is eating delicious food, trying new and exciting plates, and experiencing another culture through their cuisine. In Tamarindo, visitors will be delighted by the many restaurants serving up local Costa Rican dishes and other exciting eats from all over the world, thanks to the many international expats living in Tamarindo. From sushi to pizza, pasta to barbeque, from sports bars to traditional Costa Rican sodas, your palette will be pleased with the myriad of dining options in Tamarindo.

As you meander down the tree-lined streets of Tamarindo, you’re sure to spot many signs for sodas. Sodas are Costa Rican eateries, offering typical dishes. For breakfast, sodas serve up gallo pinto, which is a dish of black beans and rice, cooked together with cilantro and other herbs. Gallo pinto is served with eggs, cooked to order, and bacon, or other meat options, if you like. For lunch or dinner, order a casado, or a traditional plate that includes your choice of meat or fresh seafood, with beans, rice, yucca, fried plantains, and a salad. Eating at sodas is a great way to experience local food and meet local people. Sodas will usually offer some other dishes as well, such as arroz con pollo (fried rice with chicken), arroz con camarones (fried rice with shrimp), hamburgers, sandwiches, french fries, and yucca frita (fried yucca).

Once you’ve had your fill of casados, stop in one of Tamarindo’s many other restaurants to experience some fine dining and delicious seafood. The Black Stallion Café & Surf Saloon cooks up barbecue nightly at 7pm. The setting is described as a “Costa Rican cowboy Saloon with a surfer twist”, and dining is by reservation only, so make sure to plan ahead before joining in on this feast of assorted meats, ribs, pork, steak, chorizo, and veggies. For visitors looking to enjoy some of the areas fresh seafood, head over to the Bamboo Sushi Club. Serving up late night sushi, take out, and delicious cocktails, Bamboo Sushi Club is a great place to go to experience some of the amazing seafood caught daily in the waters of Tamarindo.

All along the waterfront in Tamarindo, you will find restaurants such as Le Beach Club, grilling up lobster, or Pangas Beach Club with an inventive cocktail menu, and steak and octopus dishes to die for. Stop by the new Green Papaya Taco Bar for some tasty tacos, or grab a pizza from Pizzeria La Baula. No matter what kind of food you want on any given day in Tamarindo, you’re sure to find something that will delight your taste buds. From local Costa Rican dishes, to Latin-Asian fusion cuisine, to mouthwatering Mediterranean plates, Tamarindo is a food lover’s paradise. So, go work up an appetite playing in the waves, then head to town for some delicious dining, and make sure to save room for dessert!
